Battery carrier - the centrepiece of your e-cigarette explained
Battery carrier guide: function, selection and safety for box mods. Discover all the tips on 18650 batteries, wattage settings and safe vaping in Switzerland.
A mod is the electronic housing that connects the battery, chipset and atomiser to form a fully functional e-cigarette. Without this component – often referred to as a ‘mod’ or ‘box mod’ – nothing works in an advanced vaping setup. Anyone switching from a disposable vape or pod system to a modular device will soon find themselves with questions about performance, battery type and safety. This guide explains how a mod is constructed, what you should look out for when buying one, and the differences between the most common models. By the end, you’ll know which device suits your vaping style and how to use it safely.
A battery mod is the lower part of a two-piece e-cigarette. It houses one or more batteries, regulates the power output via a chipset and supplies power to the screwed-on atomiser via a 510 thread. Unlike a disposable vape or a closed pod system, you can replace the battery, coil and e-liquid independently.
The terms vary: ‘Box Mod’ usually describes the rectangular version with a display, whilst ‘Tube Mod’ refers to the cylindrical shape. In the Swiss vaping trade, the terms battery mod, mod and box mod are used practically interchangeably. Technically, a distinction is also made between regulated battery mods (with a chip, safety circuits and wattage adjustment) and mechanical mods (without electronics – only for experienced users with knowledge of battery chemistry and Ohm’s law).
The chipset measures the resistance of the coil in the atomiser and delivers the set power in watts with precision. You press the fire button, current flows to the heating coil, and the e-liquid vaporises. Depending on the model, modern devices offer 5 to 200 watts of power, a temperature control (TC) mode, and safety features against short circuits, overheating and deep discharge.
Typical usage scenarios
- MTL vaping (mouth-to-lung): Power range 10–25 watts, often with nicotine salt e-liquids. A compact single-battery mod is usually sufficient.
- DL vaping (Direct Lung): 40–80 watts with sub-ohm atomisers, for dense vapour and more intense flavour. Dual-battery models deliver more stable performance here.
- Cloud chasing: 80 watts and above, usually with custom-built coils under 0.2 ohms. Requires experienced handling and high-quality batteries.
Before ordering a vape mod in Switzerland, it’s worth taking a structured look at your requirements:
- Battery type: Devices with a built-in battery are compact and beginner-friendly. Models with replaceable 18650 cells (or 21700/20700) offer longer runtime and allow for replacement when worn out. Plan for a spare set of cells if you vape all day long.
- Power range: Check what wattage your atomiser requires. A 200-watt mod is overkill if you’re vaping at 18 watts MTL – and vice versa.
- Safety certifications: Look for CE compliance, safety circuits and reputable manufacturers. Cheap, unbranded mods without certification are a real risk.
- Usability: A colour display, clear menu navigation and an easily accessible fire button make everyday use easier. Some models offer app control or USB-C charging at up to 2 A.
- Ergonomics and weight: A dual 21700 battery mod can weigh 200 g or more. Hold the device in the shop or test its weight and shape before buying.
A common mistake when starting out with e-cigarette battery mods: combining power settings that are too high with unsuitable coils. Stick to the wattage range specified by the coil manufacturer.
Which mod is suitable for beginners?
A regulated single-battery mod with 40–80 watts, a fixed or replaceable 18650 battery and a clear display is a good place to start. This way, you can learn about wattage settings and coil changes without having to deal with multiple cells.
How long does a mod battery last?
An 18650 battery with around 3000 mAh is sufficient for 400–800 puffs, depending on the power output. With dual-battery mods, the runtime doubles accordingly. After 300–500 charge cycles, the capacity drops noticeably – at which point you should replace the cells.
Are mechanical mods permitted?
Mechanical mods are legally available, but are only intended for experienced vapers with knowledge of battery chemistry, short-circuit risks and coil resistance. For beginners, regulated devices with safety circuits are clearly the safer choice.
Can I screw any atomiser onto any mod?
Thanks to the standardised 510 thread, most atomisers fit most mods. However, pay attention to the diameter – a 30 mm tank on a narrow 22 mm mod looks unsightly and sticks out.
A mod is the powerful and flexible heart of your e-cigarette. The right choice depends on your vaping style, your battery life requirements and your budget. Once you’ve used a regulated model with replaceable batteries, you’ll benefit from a long lifespan and full control over the power output. In our selection of battery mods and mods, you’ll find models to suit every need – take your time to compare power classes, battery designs and form factors, and have a look at matching atomisers too. For adults aged 18 and over only.
