A Clapton coil is a special type of coil for vapes that increases the surface area of the core, thereby noticeably enhancing flavour and vapour production. Anyone switching from standard round-wire coils will immediately notice the denser vapour and more intense flavour development. At the same time, this type of coil places different demands on wattage, cotton and resistance. In this guide, you’ll learn how a Clapton coil is constructed, which variants have become established, and what you should look out for when buying or building your own coils – so that your vape runs consistently clean, safe and flavourful.
A Clapton coil consists of two wires: a thicker core wire and a thinner wire wound spirally around the core like a guitar string. The name actually comes from guitar making – the structure is reminiscent of a wound electric guitar string. Core wires typically range from 26 to 24 AWG (approx. 0.4–0.5 mm) made of Kanthal A1, Ni80 or 316L stainless steel, wrapped with a thin 32 AWG wire.
The key difference from a classic round coil: the outer winding creates many small grooves. E-liquid collects there and vapourises more evenly. The result is a fuller flavour, which is particularly noticeable with sweet and complex flavours. On the other hand, a Clapton coil takes slightly longer to heat up and generally runs at a higher wattage than a simple round coil with the same resistance.
Clapton wire is just the starting point. Numerous coil designs have evolved from it, each with different strengths depending on the atomiser and vaping style.
Standard Clapton
A single core wire with an outer wrap. A classic introduction to the world of structured coils. Typically operates in the range of 0.4–0.8 ohms and 25–45 watts. A good compromise between flavour, vapour production and e-liquid consumption.
Fused Clapton
With the Fused Clapton, two or more core wires run parallel and are wound together. This significantly increases the evaporation surface area. Typical values: 0.2–0.4 ohms, 50–80 watts. Very popular in sub-ohm tanks and RDAs because the flavour is very direct and the vapour cloud is dense.
Alien, Staggered Fused and Co.
Further variants have emerged from the Fused Clapton: Alien coils have an irregularly shaped outer wrap, whilst staggered versions use two outer wraps. Both provide even more surface area, but require experience in coil-building and high-power mods rated at 80 watts or above.
Whether it’s a pre-made head coil for your tank or a rebuildable project: a few factors determine whether a Clapton coil runs smoothly or burns out quickly.
- Match resistance and power: Every coil pack specifies a recommended wattage range. Stay within this range, otherwise the cotton will burn or the flavour will be flat. Fused Clapton coils usually require 10–20 watts more than a standard Clapton coil with the same ohm rating.
- Choose the right material for the mode: Kanthal is robust for classic wattage vaping. For temperature control, you need Ni80, 316L stainless steel or nickel. Stainless steel works in both modes and is therefore a good all-rounder.
- Burn-in correctly: Pulse new Clapton coils briefly until they glow evenly from the inside out. Break up any hotspots using a ceramic tool or a damp cotton bud. Only then should you insert the cotton.
- Mind the amount of cotton: Clapton coils absorb more e-liquid thanks to the grooves. Don’t pull the cotton through too tightly, otherwise the flow of e-liquid will lag behind the vapourisation – the result would be a dry hit.
- E-liquid composition: High VG ratios (70/30 or more) are better suited to sub-ohm Clapton setups. Highly sweetened e-liquids cause the coil to clog more quickly; in this case, more frequent cleaning or replacement is advisable.
- For adults aged 18 and over only: Building your own coils and using high-power mods require a basic understanding of battery safety and Ohm’s law. If you’re new to vaping, it’s better to use pre-made Clapton head coils.
Is a Clapton coil better than a standard coil?
‘Better’ is relative. A Clapton coil delivers more intense flavour and more vapour, but consumes more e-liquid and battery power. For MTL beginners, a simple round-wire coil is often sufficient; for DL and sub-ohm vapers, the Clapton coil has a clear advantage.
How long does a Clapton coil last?
Depending on the e-liquid and power settings, around 7 to 14 days. Dark, heavily sweetened flavours significantly shorten the lifespan because the sugar caramelises and clogs the grooves of the outer winding. A diminishing flavour or a slightly burnt taste are clear signs that it’s time to replace it.
Fused Clapton or Standard Clapton for beginners?
Anyone entering the world of structured coils is best off starting with a Standard Clapton. It is cheaper, less fussy when burning in, and works on mid-range mods from around 40 watts. Fused Clapton is then the logical next step.
Can I wind a Clapton coil myself?
Yes, you can, using Clapton wire from a spool and a coil jig. It’s easier, however, to buy pre-made Clapton wire and simply wind it to the desired number of turns. This saves you the hassle of the basic setup and ensures consistent results.
