Drip tip - the mouthpiece of your e-cigarette explained

Drip tip guide: Difference 510 and 810, materials, shapes and purchase criteria for your e-cigarette mouthpiece. Incl. tips for beginners and professionals.

A drip tip plays a key role in determining how your e-cigarette tastes, draws and feels in your hand. This small mouthpiece between your lips and the atomiser has a noticeable impact on vapour production, flavour intensity and temperature – and can almost always be swapped out. If you stick with the standard part included in the pack, you’re missing out on potential. In the following guide, you’ll find out what types are available, how 510 and 810 differ, which materials are best, and what you should look out for before buying a drip tip. The aim is for you to know exactly which mouthpiece suits your setup and your vaping style by the end.

A drip tip is the replaceable mouthpiece of an e-cigarette. The term dates back to the days when vapers dripped e-liquid directly onto the cotton wick (‘dripping’); the mouthpiece served as the entry point. Today, the term ‘drip tip’ refers to any clip-on or screw-in end piece of a vaporiser or pod system. It consists of a channel through which the vapour flows and a collar with O-rings that seals the atomiser head.

A drip tip should be distinguished from the permanently fitted mouthpiece found on some disposable and entry-level pods: these cannot be replaced. However, as soon as the mouthpiece sits over an O-ring and can be removed, it is a drip tip in the strict sense. The common standards refer to the internal diameter of the connection: 510 drip tip (approx. 8.5 mm shaft) and 810 drip tip (approx. 12.5 mm shaft). These two standards currently cover the vast majority of all sub-ohm atomisers and MTL tanks on the Swiss market.

The drip tip channels the vapour from the coil to the lips and, through its shape, determines the draw characteristics. A narrow, long channel produces a tight, warm draw – ideal for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and nicotine-containing e-liquids with 10–20 mg/ml. A short, wide channel with an internal diameter of 10 mm or more produces cooler, cloudier draws, as is typical for direct-to-lung vaping with sub-ohm coils below 0.5 ohms.

510 Drip Tip

The 510 drip tip is the classic choice for MTL vapes and more restrictive tanks. Slim, often with bore sizes between 3 and 6 mm, it ensures precise flavour delivery and is particularly suitable for nicotine salt e-liquids and classic tobacco flavours.

810 Drip Tip

The 810 drip tip fits most modern sub-ohm tanks. The larger channel creates less resistance, the clouds become denser and the mouthpiece cools the vapour further – useful at higher wattages above 60 W.

A drip tip is inexpensive, but not just any will do. These points will determine whether you really like your new mouthpiece:

  • Check the connection: Measure or look up the shaft diameter of your atomiser. 510 and 810 are not compatible without an adapter.
  • Choose the material: Delrin and POM are heat-resistant and neutral in taste. Stainless steel looks high-quality but conducts heat – which is noticeable at high power. Resin and wood are eye-catching, with resin being the most durable.
  • Bore size to suit your draw: Narrow bore (3–5 mm) for MTL, medium (6–8 mm) for restricted direct lung, wide (9–12 mm) for cloud setups.
  • Shape and length: Short tips protrude barely at all; long ones better isolate the lips from the hot coil. Flat duckbill shapes lie flatter against the lips and reduce spitback.
  • Check the O-rings: Two clean O-rings prevent draughts and wobbling. The rubber should be elastic, not brittle.

Common mistake: forcing an 810 tip onto a 510 atomiser. This damages the top cap. Instead, use a suitable adapter or buy the correct standard.

Can I fit any drip tip onto any e-cigarette?

No. The shaft diameter is the deciding factor. A 510 drip tip only fits 510 connections, and an 810 drip tip only fits 810 connections. Pod systems often have proprietary mouthpieces that cannot be swapped at all.

Which material has the most neutral taste?

Delrin (POM) is considered flavourless and heat-resistant up to around 175 °C. Resin is visually versatile and also flavourless, but can soften when used with very hot sub-ohm coils. Stainless steel is flavourless, but conducts heat to the lip.

How do I clean a drip tip properly?

Remove the mouthpiece, rinse it under warm water and brush the channel with a cotton bud or interdental brush. Once or twice a week is sufficient if you vape daily to prevent e-liquid residue and flavour contamination.

Is it worth getting a second drip tip?

Yes, if you use several e-liquids or different draw styles. A narrow MTL tip for tobacco flavours in the morning, a wider 810 tip for fruit e-liquids in the evening – this keeps the flavour clean and ensures the draw suits the situation.

A drip tip isn’t just a styling accessory: the material, bore size and shape determine how your vapour tastes and how warm it feels. If you know the right standard (510 or 810) and make sure the O-rings are clean, you can noticeably improve your setup for just a few quid. Take your time to browse our selection of e-cigarette accessories, compare shapes and materials, and try out different bore sizes – that way you’ll find the mouthpiece that really suits your vaping style.
