Recognising and avoiding dry hits - guide to causes and care

Avoid dry hit: Causes, warning signs and care tips against burnt flavour. How to protect your coil and cotton wool for clean vapour enjoyment in everyday life in Switzerland.

A dry hit is one of the most unpleasant moments when vaping: instead of aromatic vapour, you get a sharp, burnt taste in your mouth, which often leaves your throat feeling scratchy and lingers for minutes. It is caused by overheated, dry cotton wool in the atomiser head. The good news is that with the right knowledge about coils, e-liquid flow and power settings, you can reliably avoid a dry hit in most cases. In this guide, you’ll learn the technical reasons behind it, which warning signs you should take seriously, and how to maintain your e-cigarette so that burnt-tasting puffs are no longer an issue.

A dry hit is a puff on an e-cigarette where the cotton in the coil is no longer sufficiently saturated with e-liquid. The heating coil then heats dry or partially dried-out cotton, which burns immediately. The result is a sharp, bitter vapour that tastes of burnt paper – unmistakable and unpleasant.

Technically, a distinction is made between a mild dry hit (the cotton dries out partially, the flavour becomes thin and slightly charred) and a full dry hit, where the cotton visibly chars. A dry hit is not the same as a so-called burnt hit caused by a faulty coil: it is almost always caused by an imbalance between the e-liquid that has been vaped and the e-liquid flowing in. With sub-ohm vapes featuring resistances below 1.0 ohms, it occurs more quickly than with MTL setups because more power is involved.

The causes of a burnt taste can be divided into a few main scenarios. If you know them, you can spot the risk even before taking your first puff.

Wattage too high for the coil

Every coil has a recommended power range, which is usually printed directly on the top (e.g. 0.4 ohms | 25–40 W). If you vape consistently at the upper limit or above, the e-liquid evaporates faster than the cotton can absorb it. The result: burnt cotton, broken coil.

Puffs that are too fast or too long

If you take a ten-second draw or chain-vape without a break, the cotton has no time to re-saturate. This becomes a particular problem with high-viscosity VG e-liquids (70/30 or 80/20).

Wrong e-liquid or empty tank

A liquid with a high VG content flows more slowly through the wicking holes. If the tank level is low and the wicking holes are exposed, no liquid reaches the cotton. Even a freshly replaced coil that hasn’t been prepared correctly often leads to a burnt taste on the first puff.

With a few simple routines, the problem becomes the exception. These points cover the most common sources of error:

  • Always prime the coil: Before inserting a new atomiser head, saturate the visible cotton directly with 4–6 drops of e-liquid and then let it soak for 5–10 minutes in the filled tank. This ensures the cotton is fully saturated before power is applied.
  • Keep the wattage within the recommended range: Start at the lower end of the printed range and increase in 2-watt increments. As soon as the flavour changes, reduce the wattage immediately.
  • Do not let the tank run below a third: if the liquid level drops below the wicking holes, the cotton will no longer absorb any liquid. Top up before it becomes critical.
  • Pauses between puffs: 10–15 seconds is usually enough for fresh e-liquid to soak into the cotton – particularly with VG-heavy short fills.
  • Change the coil in good time: After 7–14 days or when the flavour noticeably diminishes. A worn-out coil is more likely to produce dry hits because the cotton has already become compacted by residue.

Also bear in mind the ambient temperature: in winter, e-liquid becomes thicker. If you leave the pod in a cold car overnight, you should warm it up before taking your first puff and wait a moment.

Is a dry hit dangerous?

A single dry hit is unpleasant but not an immediate health risk. However, regularly inhaling burnt wadding is not recommended as it produces thermal decomposition products. If you taste a burnt flavour: stop immediately and check the coil.

Why does it taste burnt even though the tank is full?

This is usually down to the coil itself: incorrect priming, too high a wattage or a coil head that has already worn out. Clogged wicking channels caused by sweet e-liquids with a high sugar content are also a common cause.

Can burnt cotton be salvaged?

No. Once the cotton has charred, the bitter taste remains in the material. The coil must be replaced. With rebuildables, you can re-wrap the cotton; the wire itself can often still be used after a short dry burn.

Are disposable vapes also affected?

Yes, though less frequently, as they are factory-calibrated. Towards the end of their lifespan, however, when the e-liquid is running low, dry hits typically occur – this is the signal that the device should be disposed of correctly.

A dry hit is almost always avoidable if the coil, power setting and e-liquid are compatible and you give your atomiser time to prime. Priming, a moderate wattage and regular coil changes are the three most important ways to prevent a burnt taste. If your current atomiser head frequently delivers burnt-tasting puffs, it’s often worth taking a look at suitable replacement models: in our selection of coils and atomiser heads, you’ll find options for every setup – from a smooth MTL draw to a powerful sub-ohm setup.
