Firmware update: Safely flash and update battery carriers

E-cigarette firmware update: How to flash your battery carrier safely and without risk. Instructions, tools and typical errors - explained step by step.

A firmware update brings new features, improved stability and sometimes even better performance from your mod – provided you do it properly. Manufacturers such as GeekVape, Voopoo, Vaporesso and DNA-based mods regularly release new software versions that fix bugs, expand Curve mode or unlock new coils. If you never update, you’ll not only miss out on features but, in the worst case, risk malfunctions with newer vaporisers. In this guide, you’ll learn what mod firmware actually is, how to update your mod and what to look out for when flashing, so your device doesn’t end up as a paperweight.

Firmware is the operating software permanently stored in the mod. It controls everything the chip in the mod does: regulating output power, measuring coil resistance, calculating temperature control, triggering protection mechanisms against short circuits or overheating, and displaying menus. Unlike e-liquid or a coil, firmware is not a consumable part, but code – comparable to a computer’s BIOS.

It is important to make this distinction: firmware is not the same as a profile or a setting. If you change the wattage or temperature in the menu, the firmware remains unaffected. A software update for the e-cigarette, on the other hand, replaces the entire control code. Well-known firmware platforms include Evolv DNA (with the Escribe software) or the proprietary systems from Voopoo (Gene chip) and Vaporesso (Axon chip). Not every mod is updateable – budget entry-level devices and most pod systems usually have closed firmware without a USB update function.

A firmware update is particularly worthwhile when the manufacturer releases a new version that resolves specific issues or adds new features. Typical reasons:

  • New atomiser is not recognised correctly (incorrect resistance displayed)
  • Display glitches, freezing or spontaneous reboots
  • Battery indicator is inaccurate or charging behaviour has improved
  • New modes such as boost function or advanced curve settings

How to flash firmware

  1. Download the manufacturer’s tool: e.g. Escribe (DNA), Voopoo Upgrade Tool, Vaporesso Updater. Only from the manufacturer’s official website.
  2. Select the correct firmware file: exactly for your model and hardware revision.
  3. Fully charge the battery: at least 80%, preferably 100%. An interruption due to a flat cell can brick the chip.
  4. Connect the mod to the PC via USB-C or Micro-USB, launch the tool, and run the update.
  5. Do not disconnect the device until the software displays “Success” or “Done”.

The process usually takes one to three minutes. Afterwards, the mod will restart automatically and display the new version in the menu.

A faulty update can render the mod permanently unusable. These points will help you get through the process safely:

  • Official sources only: Download firmware exclusively directly from the manufacturer. Versions from forums or unofficial repositories may be tampered with or belong to the wrong hardware revisions.
  • Check the model and revision: Many mods exist in multiple hardware versions (e.g. V1, V2). The wrong firmware simply won’t boot or will cause measurement values to be incorrect.
  • Do not skip intermediate versions: For major version jumps, some manufacturers recommend a gradual update. Read the changelog.
  • Use a reliable USB cable: A data cable, not just a charging cable. Cheap cables tend to drop the connection mid-flash.
  • Prefer a Windows PC: Most vape update tools do not run natively on macOS or Linux. Virtual machines can cause USB issues.
  • Remove and reinsert the battery if the mod behaves strangely after the update. A simple soft reset fixes many start-up issues.

Most common mistake: Starting the update with a half-full battery and the cable wobbling. Allow five quiet minutes, sit at your desk and leave the mod alone until it’s finished.

Can I update any e-cigarette?

No. Disposable products, most pod systems and many cheap entry-level mods do not have an update function. Primarily, regulated battery mods with a USB port and their own manufacturer software, such as DNA, Gene or Axon chipsets, are updateable.

What happens if the firmware flash goes wrong?

In the best-case scenario, the mod simply won’t start up and you can repeat the update. In the worst-case scenario, the chip is ‘bricked’ and can only be repaired via special recovery modes or by sending it in for repair. Therefore: make sure the battery is fully charged, use a stable cable, and don’t disconnect it.

How often should I update the e-cigarette’s software?

There is no mandatory schedule. It makes sense to update when the manufacturer releases a new version that fixes bugs or supports a new atomiser you want to use. You don’t need to flash for purely cosmetic changes.

Will I lose my settings with a firmware update?

Usually, yes. Wattage profiles, curve settings and saved coils are often reset. Make a note of your favourite settings beforehand or export them if your device allows it.

A firmware update is no rocket science if you stick to official sources, ensure your battery is fully charged and use a clean USB cable. Done correctly, your mod will remain up to date firmware-wise and will also reliably recognise future atomisers. If you’re considering switching to a modern, updateable mod, you’ll find devices with open firmware in our selection of mods – complemented by suitable coils and chargers. Take your time to have a look around and compare the chipsets before you decide.
