Flavour Drop - flavour booster for your e-liquid explained simply
Flavour Drop guide: What flavour boosters can do, how to dose them and what to look out for when buying. Incl. tips on maturing time, base mix and Swiss shipping.
A flavour drop is a highly concentrated flavouring that allows you to enhance the taste of an existing e-liquid or mix a neutral base into a fully-fledged e-liquid yourself. Instead of buying a whole shortfill, you simply add a few drops of a flavour enhancer and tailor the taste precisely to your preferences. This saves money, reduces waste and opens up a whole world of flavours. In this guide, you’ll learn how a flavour drop is formulated, how to dose it correctly, what to look out for when buying, and what mistakes to avoid – whether you’re a beginner or already mix your own e-liquids.
A flavour drop – often also called an aroma drop, aroma booster or flavour enhancer – is a concentrated food flavouring based on propylene glycol (PG), sometimes with a small proportion of VG or ethanol as a solvent. The term does not refer to a strictly defined category, but describes a flavour concentrate in a drop-friendly bottle that can be added directly to a liquid.
Distinction: A shortfill is a ready-made, nicotine-free e-liquid in a large bottle, to which you usually just add a nicotine shot. A longfill already contains a concentrated flavour mixture that you top up with base. A Flavor Drop, on the other hand, is a pure flavour component – not ready to vape and highly concentrated (typically 10–20% flavour content in the final mix).
Flavor Drops are usually available in 10 ml or 30 ml bottles with a fine dropper tip, allowing you to dispense every single drop with precision. 1 drop is approximately 0.05 ml.
A Flavor Drop as a liquid additive is useful in three scenarios: you want to enhance the flavour of an existing liquid, you want to combine two flavours, or you’re mixing your own liquid from scratch.
Spicing up an existing e-liquid
A bland strawberry e-liquid often tastes flat. Adding 2–4 drops of a vanilla or cream booster to 10 ml will give it more depth. Important: add in small increments, shake well and let the e-liquid settle for a few hours before judging.
Mixing your own creations
Using a nicotine-free PG/VG base (e.g. 50/50 or 70/30), one or more flavour concentrates and, optionally, a nicotine shot, you can create your own e-liquid to your liking. Typical mixing ratios are 10–15% flavour – that means 1 ml of flavouring to 9 ml of base for a 10-ml e-liquid.
Flavour adjustments
Too sweet? A drop of menthol or cooling booster balances it out. Too one-dimensional? A drop of cream or custard adds body. This is how you can salvage e-liquids that you don’t particularly like on their own.
Not every flavour booster suits every base or coil. The following points will help you choose:
- Check the recommended dosage: Reputable manufacturers specify a percentage range (e.g. ‘8–12%’). Start with the lower end and work your way up.
- Allow for steeping time: Fruit flavours are often at their best after 1–3 days, whilst tobacco and cream notes need 7–14 days. Judging them before this is too soon.
- Consider the base ratio: For sub-ohm vapes (under 1.0 ohms), a 70/30 VG/PG ratio works better; for MTL pods, 50/50 is best. Some flavours develop more intensely in PG-dominant bases.
- Bottle quality: A precise dropper tip prevents over-dosing. Amber glass or PET bottles protected from light keep the flavour stable for longer.
- Shelf life: 18–24 months unopened, 6–12 months once opened. Store in a cool, dark place.
- Compatibility with nicotine salt: Not every Flavor Drop is compatible with nicotine salt blends. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.
Common mistakes: too high a dosage (becomes bitter and harsh), no steeping time, combining too many flavours at once (three should be the maximum) and mixing without gloves or a clean syringe.
How many drops of Flavor Drop should I add to 10 ml of e-liquid?
As a rule of thumb, use 2–5 drops per 10 ml if you just want to enhance a ready-made e-liquid. When mixing your own with a base, follow the manufacturer’s percentage recommendation, usually 10–15%.
Can I combine several Flavor Drops?
Yes, up to three flavours can usually be blended harmoniously. Choose flavours that complement each other (fruit + cream, tobacco + vanilla) and reduce the individual dosage accordingly so that the total flavour content does not exceed 15%.
Can a Flavor Drop be vaped neat?
No. A Flavor Drop is highly concentrated and not intended for direct use. Vaped on its own, it tastes bitter, can quickly burn out the coil and irritates the throat and airways.
Does a Flavor Drop contain nicotine?
Generally no. Flavour Drops are pure flavours. You add nicotine separately using a nicotine shot – exclusively for adults aged 18 and over.
A Flavor Drop is the flexible building block between ready-made e-liquid and complete DIY mixing: affordable, precisely dosable and ideal for experimenting. The key factors are the correct dosage, sufficient steeping time and a base that suits your setup. If you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test step by step, you’ll quickly find your favourite blend. You’ll find suitable varieties in our selection of flavour concentrates, and with a nicotine-free base, you can create your e-liquid entirely yourself.
