Liquid Control - Control the flow of liquid on the vaporiser
Liquid control guide: How to precisely regulate the liquid flow on the vaporiser, avoid dry hits and get more flavour from every puff. Read all the tips now.
Liquid Control refers to the feature on modern vapes that allows you to manually adjust the flow of e-liquid to the coil. Anyone who has ever experienced a dry, harsh hit (dry hit) or, conversely, gurgling noises and leaking e-liquid knows the problem: the vape is receiving too little or too much e-liquid. This is exactly where Liquid Control comes in. In the following guide, you’ll learn how e-liquid flow control works technically, what types of devices are available on the Swiss market, and what you should look out for when buying and using them daily – so your setup vapes consistently and cleanly.
Liquid Control is a regulating mechanism on the tank or pod that controls the openings between the e-liquid reservoir and the coil. Inside, there is usually a rotating ring or slider with small slits. Depending on the position, the feed holes to the wick are fully, partially or not at all open. In this way, you determine how much e-liquid is allowed to flow through per unit of time.
Do not confuse Liquid Control with Airflow Control, which regulates the airflow, or with the wattage setting on the mod. Airflow determines the draw resistance, the wattage controls the heat at the coil – Liquid Control exclusively regulates the flow of e-liquid to the coil. However, all three systems are interlinked: a high wattage setting without sufficient e-liquid supply quickly leads to burnt cotton, whilst a fully open e-liquid flow at low power causes the chamber to flood.
The atomiser head is surrounded on the outside by a reservoir. Small holes connect this e-liquid chamber to the cotton wrapping the coil. When you turn the Juice Control ring, you move a baffle in front of these holes.
Typical settings
- Closed / very small: For thin e-liquids with a high PG content (from approx. 50% PG) or nicotine salt e-liquids in mouth-to-lung setups.
- Medium opening: For standard e-liquids with a 50/50 or 60/40 VG/PG mix at moderate power (15–30 W).
- Wide open: For thick sub-ohm e-liquids with a high VG content (70% VG and above) and power settings above 40 W.
In practice, this means: if you switch from a fruity 10ml e-liquid to a thick dessert shortfill, you should adjust the Juice Control accordingly. Temperature changes also play a role – in a cold car, e-liquid flows more thickly; in a warm living room, it flows more thinly.
Not every vape device offers a separate e-liquid flow control. Particularly budget pod systems and disposable devices do not include this feature, whilst sub-ohm tanks and rebuildables increasingly do. These points will help you choose:
- Check the seal: High-quality e-liquid control systems use O-rings that remain tight even after repeated turning. Cheap products tend to leak.
- Click mechanism: A distinct click mechanism makes it easier to adjust settings consistently, especially when on the go.
- Coil compatibility: Some tanks only combine liquid control with specific coil types. Check which coils your vaporiser accepts.
- Operation with a full tank: Good systems can be adjusted continuously even when fully filled, without any liquid leaking out.
- Cleaning: A removable ring makes maintenance much easier after changing flavours.
Common mistakes: Opening the Liquid Control fully and then wondering why the tank leaks when laid on its side. Or forgetting the ring when filling – if it’s in the closed position, the cotton won’t absorb any liquid, and the first puff will taste burnt. Always turn the flow control to the appropriate setting before switching on and allow new coils two to three minutes to soak up the liquid.
Do I need to adjust the Liquid Control with every puff?
No. You adjust it once to suit your e-liquid and setup. It’s only worth readjusting when you change your e-liquid, coil or wattage range.
Why is my tank leaking despite the Liquid Control being closed?
This is usually caused by faulty O-rings, a loose coil or an overfilled tank. Take the atomiser apart, check the seals and do not fill it to the brim.
Does Liquid Control help prevent dry hits?
Yes, indirectly. If you set the flow too low with thick VG e-liquid, the cotton won’t keep up. In that case, open the control one notch further and reduce the wattage as a test.
Is Liquid Control also available on disposable e-cigarettes?
Rarely. Disposable devices use pre-calibrated wicks. If you value fine-tuning, you’re better off opting for refillable pod systems or tanks.
Liquid Control is a small detail with a big impact: being able to adjust the e-liquid flow ensures a consistently clean vapour, protects the coil and extracts more flavour from every e-liquid. When buying, look out for seals, the adjustment mechanism and ease of cleaning – and always adjust the flow to suit the viscosity and power output. In our selection of vaporisers, you’ll find models with precise juice control, and we have the matching coils for every wattage range.
