Mouthpiece for shisha & vape: materials, sizes, hygiene

Mouthpiece guide for shisha and e-cigarettes: materials, drip tip sizes and hygiene tips. Choose the right vape or shisha mouthpiece online now.

The mouthpiece is the component through which you inhale the vapour when using a hookah or e-cigarette – and is therefore the part that most directly determines flavour, draw comfort and hygiene. Whether you’re sharing a hookah with friends or looking to optimise your vape setup, the shape, material and size of the mouthpiece have a noticeable impact on the vaping experience. This guide shows you the different types available, how a hookah mouthpiece differs from a drip tip on a vaporiser, and what to look out for before buying a mouthpiece – including care tips for long-term use.

A mouthpiece is the front end of a hookah hose or vape device that you place between your lips. With a shisha, it sits at the end of the hose and directs the cooled smoke from the bowl into your mouth. With a vape mouthpiece – known as a drip tip in vaping lingo – it is attached to the top of the vape and directs the vapour directly from the chamber above the coil.

Technically, the two types differ significantly: a hookah mouthpiece is usually 8–15 cm long, hollow, often decorated and either permanently attached to the hose or designed as a clip-on part. A drip tip, by contrast, measures only 15–40 mm and follows standardised diameters – typically 510 (approx. 8.5 mm internal) or 810 (approx. 12.5 mm internal). Both fulfil the same basic function, but must be adapted to completely different draw patterns and temperatures.

The selection is vast, and the right choice depends on the intended use.

Shisha mouthpiece

  • Disposable hygienic mouthpieces: Made of plastic, ideal for sessions with several smokers. Simply slot them onto the end of the hose.
  • Personal mouthpieces made of wood, aluminium or stainless steel: Durable, often intricately designed. Stainless steel is heat-resistant and tasteless, whilst wood provides a warm draw.
  • Glass mouthpieces: Flavourless, heavy and pleasantly cool on the lips – but more delicate.

Drip tip (vape mouthpiece)

  • 510 Drip Tip: Narrow draw, suitable for MTL vaping (Mouth-to-Lung, similar to a cigarette) and pod systems.
  • 810 drip tip: Wide opening for sub-ohm atomisers and cloud-chasing DL vaping (Direct-Lung).
  • Materials: Delrin and Ultem stay cool at higher wattages, stainless steel conducts heat more effectively, resin offers visual variety.

A heat-resistant material makes a noticeable difference, particularly with sub-ohm setups at 40–80 watts: a metal tip can become uncomfortably warm during long draws.

Before you buy a mouthpiece, it’s worth taking a moment to check it matches your setup and preferences:

  • Check compatibility: Does the drip tip fit your atomiser (510 or 810)? Some tanks have proprietary connections. For shisha hoses, the inner diameter at the end is crucial.
  • Draw characteristics: Narrow opening (approx. 3–5 mm) = tighter, more concentrated draw. Wide opening (8 mm+) = airier, more voluminous vapour.
  • Material and temperature: Choose Delrin, Ultem or glass for high performance. Stainless steel is better suited to moderate setups.
  • Hygiene when using a hookah: Always use disposable hygienic mouthpieces in social gatherings. This protects everyone involved and is now standard in any well-maintained setup.
  • Length and ergonomics: Short drip tips are discreet; long hookah mouthpieces feel more comfortable in the hand. Try out different shapes – personal preference counts for more here than any specification.
  • Cleaning: Removable mouthpieces can be rinsed under warm water. For heavier soiling, isopropyl alcohol or a mild soap solution helps, followed by thorough drying.

Can I fit any drip tip onto any vaporiser?

No. Most vaporisers use the 510 or 810 standard, but there are exceptions with manufacturer-specific connections. Before purchasing, check the diameter in the product details or on your existing tip.

How often should I change a hookah mouthpiece?

Disposable hygiene mouthpieces are intended for a single session. Personal mouthpieces can be used long-term, but you should rinse them after each use and give them a thorough clean about once a week.

Why does my drip tip get hot?

At high power settings of around 50 watts or higher, or when chain vaping, the material heats up. Metal conducts heat more efficiently than plastic. Switch to Delrin, Ultem or glass if this bothers you.

Does the mouthpiece really affect the taste?

Yes, the material and the opening size play a particularly important role. Narrower openings intensify flavours, whilst wider ones make the draw airier. Resin and stainless steel are flavour-neutral, whereas cheaper plastic can impart additional notes.

The mouthpiece is small, but crucial for comfort, taste and hygiene – whether on a hookah or a vaporiser. Look for a suitable connection, heat-resistant material and an opening that suits your inhalation style. In our selection of hoses and mouthpieces, you’ll find models for every hookah, and anyone planning a new vape setup will find what they’re looking for in the accessories section. It’s worth comparing: even a small change can make all the difference.
