Pod e-cigarette: pod systems and pod mods explained simply

Pod e-cigarette guide: function, selection and care of all common pod systems. Differences to pod mods, buying tips and comparison for beginners and professionals.

A pod is a compact type of e-cigarette in which the e-liquid tank and atomiser head are combined in a replaceable cartridge. This guide explains how a pod system is constructed, how it differs from traditional mod-style devices, and what you should look out for when buying a pod vape. You’ll learn about the different designs available, how to choose the right resistance and nicotine strength, and how to look after your pod so it vapes cleanly for a long time. This guide is aimed at adults aged 18 and over who are looking for a hassle-free alternative to tank vapes in Switzerland.

The term ‘pod’ originally refers to the replaceable cartridge, but is often used colloquially as a synonym for the entire device. A pod consists of a plastic or glass reservoir for the e-liquid, an integrated or replaceable coil, and electrical contacts that connect to the battery pod via a magnetic or plug-in connection.

A complete pod system has two main components: the battery body (device) and the cartridge (the actual pod). Filling capacities typically range from 1.5 to 4 ml, with coil resistances between 0.3 ohms (for more vapour, known as direct-to-lung) and 1.2 ohms (for the cigarette-like MTL draw, mouth-to-lung).

The pod should be distinguished from the classic disposable e-cigarette, which is discarded in its entirety, as well as from the box mod with a separate tank atomiser. A pod mod, on the other hand, is a middle ground: a pod-based device with adjustable power, often 5 to 40 watts, which integrates battery mod functions into the compact pod format.

You fill the pod with e-liquid via a silicone stopper or a side opening, attach it to the device and take a puff. Many pod systems operate automatically (auto-draw) without a fire button, whilst others have a button. The coil heats up, the e-liquid vaporises, and you inhale the vapour.

Closed pod vs. open pod

Closed pods are pre-filled and are replaced entirely once empty – practical, but less flexible. You fill open pods yourself with the e-liquid of your choice. This is more cost-effective and allows you to switch between freebase e-liquids and nicotine salts.

Typical use cases

An MTL pod with nicotine salt (10–20 mg/ml) and a 1.0-ohm coil is ideal for switching from cigarettes. If you want more vapour and flavour, opt for a sub-ohm pod mod with a 0.4-ohm coil and 20–30 watts. For on the go, a lightweight pod system with a 500–1000 mAh battery is ideal, lasting around a day.

Before choosing a pod e-cigarette, it’s worth checking the battery capacity, coil system and e-liquid compatibility. The following points will help you decide:

  • Battery life: 400–600 mAh is sufficient for occasional vaping, whilst 1000 mAh and above is recommended for frequent vapers. USB-C charging is now standard.
  • Coil replacement or pod replacement: With some systems, you only replace the coil (cheaper); with others, the entire pod. Factor in the ongoing costs.
  • Draw resistance: Adjustable airflow allows you to switch between a tight MTL draw and an airy DL draw – useful if you’re still finding your feet.
  • Power: Fixed-setting pods vape at 10–15 watts. An adjustable pod mod gives you 5–40 watts, offering more flexibility with different e-liquids.
  • E-liquid type: Nicotine salt feels smoother on the throat and works well with high-resistance coils. Freebase e-liquid with a 50/50 mix is versatile. High VG content requires sub-ohm coils.
  • Build quality and leak-proofing: Magnetic pods should hold their fill well, and filling ports should not leak. Check user reviews before buying.

Common mistakes: a high-resistance MTL coil with thick sub-ohm e-liquid – the result is a scratchy sensation and a burnt taste. Or an old pod that isn’t replaced after 2–3 weeks and tastes burnt.

How long does a pod last?

A coil or pod lasts between 5 and 14 days, depending on usage and e-liquid. Sweet, heavily sweetened e-liquids shorten the lifespan because the sugar caramelises on the coil. Replace it as soon as the flavour fades or becomes slightly burnt.

Pod system or pod mod – which is right for me?

A simple pod system is ideal if you value ease of use and operation without any settings. A pod mod is suitable if you want to control the power, use different coils and produce more vapour.

Can I fill any e-liquid into a pod?

With open pods, generally yes, but the VG/PG mix should be suitable for the coil. 50/50 e-liquids and nicotine salts work in almost all pods. High-VG e-liquids (70/30 or higher) require a sub-ohm coil under 0.6 ohms.

Is a pod suitable for beginners?

Yes, switchers in particular benefit from the ease of use: insert the pod, take a puff, done. No wattage adjustment, no coil winding. The entry barrier is significantly lower than with a classic box mod setup.

Pod systems are now the most common type of e-cigarette – compact, clean and easy to use. It is important that the coil resistance, e-liquid and draw characteristics are compatible. If you want to buy a pod vape, compare battery capacity, running costs and design before making your decision. In our selection of pod systems, you’ll find devices to suit every preference, and matching e-liquids and replacement coils complete your setup. For adults aged 18 and over only.
