Quick igniter for the hookah - application and differences
Quick-lighting guide for shisha: How to light quick-light charcoal correctly and what the differences are to natural charcoal. Incl. tips on selection and purchase.
A quick-light charcoal is a pre-treated shisha charcoal that can be lit in seconds with a lighter – ideal if you don’t have a charcoal lighter to hand or are smoking on the go. The tablets glow through within 30 to 60 seconds and are ready for use straight away. In return, you get a shorter burning time and a distinct, chemically perceptible ignition smell. In this guide, you’ll learn how quick-light coals are made, where they’re best used, how they differ from natural coals, and what to look out for when buying them. This will help you make the right choice – whether you’re planning a classic session at home or taking your hookah out onto the balcony, to a holiday home or to the lake.
A quick-light – also known as Quick Light, self-igniting charcoal or shisha quick-light – is a round or square charcoal tablet coated with an ignition agent (usually potassium nitrate). As soon as you touch the tablet with an open flame, a chain reaction begins: visible sparks appear, the charcoal sizzles, and after a few seconds the entire surface is glowing red-hot. The base usually consists of compressed charcoal dust, supplemented with binding agents.
In contrast, traditional natural charcoal made from coconut shells contains no chemical additives and must be pre-heated on an electric lighter or gas burner for around 8 to 12 minutes. Quick-lighters are therefore a convenience solution, whilst natural charcoal offers the best flavour and burn time. Typical sizes are 33 mm and 40 mm in diameter, with 22 mm being less common for small tobacco bowls.
Quick-light charcoal really comes into its own wherever you have no access to electricity or want to save time. Typical uses:
On the go and outdoors
At the campsite, on the terrace of your holiday home or during a spontaneous session in the garden, all you need is a lighter. A single tablet is enough for smaller tobacco bowls and lasts 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the size.
As an emergency solution
If your electric charcoal lighter at home is broken or you’ve forgotten your natural charcoal, the quick-light charcoal is a reliable backup. A pack of ten rolls will keep for several months if stored in a dry place.
For short sessions
If you’re only planning a 45-minute session with friends, pre-heating several natural coals doesn’t always justify the effort. With two or three quick-lighters on the bowl, you’ll be smoking in a minute.
Note: The smell when lighting is intense. Therefore, always light the charcoal outdoors or with a window open, and wait until the sparking reaction has completely finished before placing the tablet on the tobacco bowl.
Not every quick-light burns the same. These criteria will help you choose:
- Diameter to fit the bowl: 33 mm covers most standard bowls, 40 mm is suitable for Phunnel and Vortex bowls with a wide base. Measure the internal diameter of your bowl before ordering.
- Burning time: High-quality quick-lighters last 40 to 55 minutes. Cheap products sometimes burn out after 20 minutes and crumble into grey ash, which dries out the tobacco.
- Ignition behaviour: A good tablet ignites evenly across its entire surface in under 60 seconds, crackling only briefly. If the charcoal needs to be relit several times, the coating is uneven.
- Packaging: Rolls of 10 tablets each, individually wrapped in aluminium foil, stay dry for longer. Damp charcoal lights poorly and smokes unpleasantly.
- Manufacturer’s information: Brands such as Three Kings, Carbopol or Al Fakher are well-established on the Swiss market and offer consistent quality. Check the production date – older stock loses its ignition performance.
A common mistake: placing the quick-light directly on its head immediately after the first hiss. Wait around 60 seconds until the entire surface glows a white-grey colour. This prevents unburned ignition material from masking the flavour of your tobacco.
Are quick-lighters for hookahs more harmful to health than natural charcoal?
Quick-lighters contain ignition chemicals that burn off when lit. Once fully lit, the difference in pollutant emissions is minimal, though the initial odour at the start of the session may be noticeable. Regular smokers usually opt for natural charcoal for flavour reasons.
How many quick-light charcoal tablets do I need per session?
For a standard bowl, two to three 33 mm tablets are sufficient. For large phunnel bowls or longer sessions, allow for four tablets and add a fresh piece of charcoal after around 30 minutes.
Can I light quick-light coals with a normal lighter?
Yes, a stick lighter or match will do. Hold the flame against the edge of the tablet for 5 to 10 seconds until the first sparks appear. Use a charcoal tong to protect your fingers.
How do I store self-igniting charcoal correctly?
Store the rolls in a dry place, at room temperature and in their original packaging. Moisture is the biggest enemy – a damp tablet won’t light reliably and will disintegrate more quickly. Use up within three to four weeks of opening.
Quick-light coals are the practical choice if you’re on the go or want to smoke spontaneously – natural charcoal remains the benchmark for long, flavour-packed sessions. Choose according to your needs and pay attention to diameter, burn time and dry storage. In our range of hookah charcoal, you’ll find both quick-light varieties in various sizes and natural coconut charcoal. It’s also worth taking a look at the matching hookah accessories such as charcoal tongs and wind shields – so you’ll have the right equipment ready for every session.
