Sub Ohm Liquid - High VG for dense vapour and DL draw
Choosing the right sub-ohm liquid: VG/PG ratio, nicotine strength and coil tips for DL vaping. Detailed guide for beginners and professionals from Switzerland.
A sub-ohm e-liquid is the right choice if you want to produce thick clouds of vapour and intense flavour using high-powered vapes. The term does not refer to a specific formula, but rather to an e-liquid whose composition is tailored to coils with a resistance of less than 1.0 ohms. In practice, this means: a high glycerine content, moderate nicotine strength and flavours that reveal their full profile at higher wattage. Below, you’ll find out how to recognise a suitable sub-ohm e-liquid, how VG and PG interact, and what to look out for when buying in Switzerland.
A sub-ohm e-liquid is an e-liquid with a high VG content (vegetable glycerine), typically between 65% and 80%. The remainder consists of propylene glycol (PG), flavourings and – if desired – nicotine. This mixture is thicker than a classic 50/50 e-liquid and produces significantly more vapour when vaped on a sub-ohm coil.
The term ‘sub-ohm’ refers to the electrical resistance of the coil: if this is below 1.0 ohm, more current flows at the same battery voltage, the coil gets hotter and vaporises larger quantities of liquid per puff. Because thin, PG-heavy e-liquid would quickly become harsh at this temperature, high VG e-liquid is used: it delivers smoother puffs, pronounced vapour production and a rounder flavour. Sub-ohm e-liquid should be distinguished from MTL e-liquid, which, with a 50/50 ratio and often higher nicotine strength, is designed for mouth-to-lung vaping.
Sub-ohm e-liquids are tailored for direct-to-lung (DL) vaping. This involves inhaling the vapour directly into the lungs, similar to taking a deep breath. To do this, you need a suitable sub-ohm atomiser, a mod with sufficient power (usually 40–100 watts) and, of course, a DL e-liquid with a high VG content.
Typical uses
- Shortfills (50 ml, 100 ml): Bottled nicotine-free, large bottle – ideal for sticking with one flavour for longer. Nicotine shots can be added as required.
- Ready-made 10 ml e-liquids with high VG: Handy for trying out new flavours without a large amount left over.
- Flavour concentrates + bases: For DIY vapers who want to mix their own sub-ohm e-liquid in Switzerland.
Why the flavour tastes different
At higher wattages, fruity, sweet and dessert-like flavours come through more strongly, whilst subtle tobacco notes tend to fade into the background. That’s why varieties such as berry mixes, menthol-fruit or custard combinations are particularly popular in the sub-ohm range.
A sub-ohm e-liquid will only suit your setup if the hardware and liquid are compatible. These points will help you choose:
- Check the VG/PG ratio: At least 65% VG, preferably 70/30 or 80/20. Anything lower will cause a scratchy sensation in the throat at high wattages.
- Adjust the nicotine strength: For DL vaping, 0 mg to 3 mg/ml is standard. 6 mg or more quickly becomes unpleasant for adults when producing large clouds of vapour.
- Match the coil resistance: If your coil is between 0.15–0.5 ohms, you definitely need a high-VG liquid. At 0.6–0.8 ohms, a 60/40 mix is often sufficient.
- Choose bottle size: Shortfills are cheaper per millilitre, whilst 10 ml bottles stay fresh longer when switching flavours.
- Note the steeping time: High VG content often requires 2–5 days of ‘steeping’ after mixing with nicotine shots for the flavour to fully develop.
Common mistakes: using e-liquid that is too thin on a 0.2-ohm coil (leads to dry hits), too high a nicotine strength in a DL setup (causes a harsh throat hit), or switching flavours completely without cleaning the tank first. Also, don’t fill the tank completely empty – a minimum level protects the cotton from burning.
What VG/PG ratio is ideal for sub-ohm vaping?
For most sub-ohm vapes, a ratio of 70/30 or 80/20 (VG/PG) is recommended. This produces dense vapour, protects the coil and remains pleasantly smooth on the throat.
Can I use a 50/50 e-liquid in a sub-ohm tank?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended. Thin e-liquids flow too quickly, can leak and produce a harsh draw at high power. It is better to use a high VG e-liquid.
How much nicotine can a DL e-liquid handle?
0 mg to a maximum of 3 mg/ml is advisable. Because you inhale significantly more vapour per puff with DL vaping, even 3 mg is equivalent in effect to a standard cigarette. For adults aged 18 and over only.
How long does a shortfill last after mixing?
Once nicotine shots have been added, a shortfill will keep for around 12 months if stored in a cool, dark place. The flavour changes slightly after 2–3 months, but remains usable.
A sub-ohm liquid only really comes into its own when paired with the right coil and sufficient power: plenty of vapour, clear flavours and a smooth DL draw. The VG content, nicotine strength and the right bottle size are crucial. In our selection of short-fill liquids, you’ll find high-VG varieties ranging from fruity to dessert-like, along with matching nicotine shots and sub-ohm coils. Take your time to compare the profiles and try out the flavours that suit your setup.
