The sweet spot in vaping refers to the point at which your setup – comprising the coil, e-liquid and power output – works in perfect harmony, delivering the right balance of flavour, vapour production and throat hit all at once. Many vapers blindly fiddle with the wattage and then wonder why they get a burnt taste or bland puffs. Yet the optimal range usually lies within a narrow window of just a few watts. The sweet spot is the power range in which a specific coil reaches its full potential with a specific e-liquid. Technically speaking, it involves the interplay of three variables: electrical power (watts), heating wire resistance (ohms) and the vapourisation temperature of the e-liquid. Only when glycerine (VG), propylene glycol (PG) and flavourings vapourise evenly, without overheating, does the full flavour profile emerge.

The sweet spot must be distinguished from the mere ‘maximum wattage’ that manufacturers print on coils. This value marks the upper limit, not the optimum. The actual sweet spot usually lies in the lower to middle third of the specified range. A coil rated at 40–80 W often performs best flavour-wise at 55–65 W. The perfect temperature for temperature-control setups (usually 200–230 °C) is also key – it prevents dry hits and protects the cotton.

Finding the sweet spot is a matter of fine-tuning, not guesswork. Always start at the lower end of the manufacturer’s range and work your way up in 2–3-watt increments. Take at least 3–4 puffs between each adjustment and give the coil a 15–20-second break.

Influence of the e-liquid

High-VG e-liquids (70/30 or 80/20) require more power to vapourise cleanly and tend to operate at the upper end of the sweet spot. Thinner 50/50 e-liquids and nicotine salts prefer lower wattages – usually 10–25 W with MTL coils. Sweet dessert flavours caramelise at too high a power setting, whilst fruity e-liquids can handle higher wattages.

Influence of coil and airflow

Mesh coils have a larger heating surface and often reach peak performance at the atomiser sooner than classic wrapped coils. A wide airflow cools the vapour and requires slightly more wattage for the same flavour, whilst a tighter draw reduces this requirement. Test both settings simultaneously before finalising your wattage.

The following points will help you reliably find your personal sweet spot:

  • Burn-in a fresh coil: New coils need 5–10 minutes of e-liquid flow before they reach the sweet spot. Increasing the wattage too early ruins the cotton.
  • Proceed in small steps: 1–3 watts per test round. Large jumps mask the transition from ‘too cool’ to ‘too hot’.
  • Take flavour signals seriously: Fade or watery means: increase the wattage. Harsh, burnt or metallic means: reduce the wattage immediately and check the e-liquid level.
  • Consider e-liquid viscosity: With VG-heavy e-liquids, allow sufficient steeping time in the coil; otherwise, you’ll get a false impression of the optimal range.
  • Keep an eye on the temperature: If you’re using TC mode, set the perfect temperature first (approx. 220 °C) and then only vary the wattage to control the heating rate.
  • Make a note: Write down the coil type, e-liquid, wattage and airflow. The next time you change the coil, you’ll be back in the sweet spot straight away.

Remember: The sweet spot is subjective. Two people using the same setup often prefer settings that differ by 5–10 watts, as vaping technique and taste perception vary.

Does the sweet spot shift over time?

Yes. As the coil ages, residue builds up, the resistance changes slightly and heat distribution becomes more uneven. Many vapers need to reduce the wattage by 2–4 W after 5–7 days of use to maintain the original flavour.

Does a higher sweet spot mean more vapour?

Not necessarily. While more watts do produce a greater volume of vapour, this is only true up to the point where the coil can still draw the e-liquid cleanly. Beyond that, dry hits occur – vapour volume drops and the flavour changes.

Do I need a separate sweet spot for nicotine salts?

Yes, absolutely. Nicotine salt e-liquids are used in pod systems and MTL vapes at 10–20 W. Higher wattages make the nicotine (for adults aged 18 and over) harsh and scratchy in the throat.

Does temperature control help with the sweet spot?

TC stabilises the perfect temperature and prevents overheating, but it does not replace fine-tuning the wattage. It is a safeguard, not an automatic guarantee of optimal flavour.
