Sweeteners in liquid: understanding sweeteners & dosing

Sweeteners in liquid provide more sweetness when vaping. Everything you need to know about sucralose, ethyl maltol, dosing and coil care - including tips for mixing your own.

Sweetener liquid is the umbrella term for additives that make an e-liquid sweeter without using sugar. Particularly with fruit, dessert and drink flavours, choosing the right sweetener often determines whether a recipe tastes flat or rich and intense. At the same time, their use has consequences: coils burn out faster, the flavour can become off-putting, and the dosage is trickier than with traditional flavours. In this guide, you’ll learn which sweeteners are typically found in sweetener e-liquids, how to dose them, and what to look out for when buying – presented in a concise format and tailored for Swiss vapers aged 18 and over.

A sweetener e-liquid is a liquid additive based on propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerine (VG), in which one or more sweeteners are dissolved. It is added in small quantities to the base e-liquid or a DIY mix to enhance the perceived sweetness. Traditional sugar is not used, as it would caramelise during vapourisation and cause the coil to stick.

The most common ingredients are sucralose, ethyl maltol and, occasionally, stevia or acesulfame K. Technically, a sweetener thus differs clearly from a flavour concentrate: flavours provide the taste (e.g. strawberry, vanilla, tobacco), whilst the sweetener merely enhances the sweetness. In ready-made short fills and 10ml e-liquids, the sweetener is already included in the correct proportion – when mixing your own, you decide for yourself how much to add.

Every sweetener has its own profile. If you want to use sweeteners selectively, you should be familiar with the most important ones.

Sucralose

Sucralose is the most commonly used sweetener in vaping. It is around 600 times sweeter than table sugar and is noticeable even in quantities as low as 0.5%. Vaping sucralose delivers a clean, sugar-like sweetness without any flavour of its own. Drawback: It caramelises on the coil and leads to significantly faster wear and tear, particularly in sub-ohm vapes below 0.5 ohms.

Ethyl Maltol

Ethyl maltol provides a soft, slightly caramel-like sweetness with a cotton candy character. It rounds off recipes and enhances fruit and dessert notes, but is not a pure sugar substitute. Typical dosages range from 0.25 to 1% of the total mixture.

Further options

Stevia, FA Magic Mist or ready-made sweetener blends combine several components. They often provide a more moderate sweetness but put less strain on the coil than pure sucralose.

A liquid sweetener needs to be dosed correctly, otherwise it will mask flavours rather than enhance them. These points will help you choose:

  • Check the concentration: 5–10% sucralose in PG is typical. The higher the concentration, the more sparingly you need to dose – 1–3 drops per 10 ml is usually sufficient.
  • Consider the base: PG-based sweeteners dissolve more quickly; VG variants are gentler but require a longer steeping time.
  • Allow for coil wear: Highly sweetened e-liquids reduce coil lifespan by 30–70%. Rebuildable atomisers benefit from regular dry-burning.
  • Start small: Begin with 0.25% and increase in 0.1% increments. Too much sweetness can be cloying and mask fruity notes.
  • Match the flavour: Desserts, bakery and drinks tolerate more sweetness, whilst clear fruit and menthol recipes usually tolerate significantly less.

Also pay attention to the origin and food-grade quality of the raw materials. Reputable manufacturers declare ingredients and batch numbers. In Switzerland, sweeteners are classified as e-liquid additives for adults aged 18 and over.

How much sweetener should go into the e-liquid?

As a guideline, use 0.25–1% for sucralose-based sweeteners with a 10% concentration. For a 50 ml base, that’s 1–5 ml. Always start at the lower end and adjust after the curing period.

Why do my coils burn out faster with sweetener?

Sweeteners such as sucralose burn on the hot heating coil and form a dark layer. This reduces heat transfer and alters the taste. Lower wattages and more frequent replacement of cotton or coils solve the problem.

Can I mix sweetener into ready-made e-liquids?

Yes, 1–2 drops per 10 ml is usually sufficient. Shake well and leave to stand for a few hours. Bear in mind, however, that many short-fills are already sweetened – adding extra sweetener may then overload the recipe.

Is sweetener harmful to health?

Studies on the vaping of sucralose are limited. There are no health claims. Those who are sensitive or wish to protect their coils should opt for ethyl maltol or use sweetener sparingly.

A well-balanced sweetener liquid enhances flavours, rounds off recipes and makes DIY blends suitable for everyday use – as long as you keep an eye on dosage, coil maintenance and flavour balance. Those wishing to delve deeper will find suitable building blocks in our selection of flavour concentrates and additives, and can then compare the result with ready-made short fills or 10ml e-liquids. This way, you can find your own sweetness level step by step.
