Throat hit - how to control the throat hit when vaping

Throat hit explained: This is how the scratchy throat occurs when vaping. Find out how to increase or decrease the throat hit and control the flash.

The throat hit is the noticeable scratchy sensation or ‘flare’ in the throat that occurs when inhaling vapour – a key sensory characteristic that many people switching from tobacco cigarettes actively seek out. The intensity of this sensation depends on the nicotine content, e-liquid composition, device power and inhalation technique. Those new to vaping often find the throat hit harsh; experienced vapers, on the other hand, sometimes miss it with mild setups. In the following guide, you’ll read exactly what triggers the throat hit, how to intensify or tone it down, and what to look out for when choosing e-liquid, coils and inhalation style to ensure the vaping experience suits you.

The throat hit – also known as the ‘flash’ – describes the slight, scratchy sensation at the back of the throat when inhaling the vapour. It is caused by a combination of chemical and thermal stimuli on the mucous membranes. Nicotine is the main culprit: the higher the concentration, the more intense the sensation. Propylene glycol (PG) also plays a significant role, as it delivers flavours more sharply and is itself slightly irritating. Vegetable glycerine (VG), on the other hand, has a milder effect and tends to dampen the sensation.

The throat hit must be distinguished from a simple cough reflex, which usually indicates vapour that is too hot, incorrect inhalation technique or intolerances. A properly adjusted throat hit feels noticeable but controlled – comparable to the draw on a light cigarette. A persistent, unpleasant scratchy sensation in the throat, on the other hand, is an indication that something in the setup needs adjusting.

The throat hit is particularly important for former smokers because it mimics the tactile sensation of smoking a cigarette, thereby making the switch easier. Without a noticeable throat hit, many find vaping to feel ‘empty’. Physiologically, the sensation is controlled by three factors:

Nicotine and nicotine form

Free-base nicotine (traditional nicotine in short-fills and 10 ml e-liquids) produces a significantly harsher hit at the same concentration than nicotine salt. A 10 ml e-liquid with 12 mg/ml free-base feels noticeably harsher in an MTL atomiser than a nicotine salt with 20 mg/ml, even though the strength is higher.

PG/VG ratio

A 50/50 PG/VG mix delivers a clear throat hit and is suitable for pod systems and MTL setups. E-liquids with a 70/30 VG/PG ratio are smoother, produce more vapour and are typically used in sub-ohm vapes.

Power and temperature

Higher wattages produce hotter vapour, which intensifies the sensation briefly but quickly becomes unpleasant. A clean coil and fresh cotton are essential.

If you want to increase or reduce the throat hit, you should consider several factors at once. These points will help you fine-tune your setup:

  • Choose nicotine strength: For those switching from strong cigarettes, 12–20 mg/ml is recommended; for light smokers, 6–10 mg/ml. Without nicotine, only a minimal sensation remains due to the PG.
  • Adjust the PG ratio: More PG (50/50 or 60/40) intensifies the throat hit, whilst more VG (70/30) makes the draw smoother and produces more vapour.
  • Consider coil resistance: MTL coils from 1.0 ohms at 10–15 watts deliver a cigarette-like hit. Sub-ohm coils below 0.5 ohms produce a lot of vapour, but a more diffuse sensation.
  • Adjust the airflow: A tight draw (MTL) concentrates the flavour and hit, whilst an open draw (DTL) dilutes both with more air.
  • Consider flavours: Menthol, cinnamon and strong tobacco flavours subjectively intensify the throat hit, whilst fruit blends have a milder effect.

Most common mistake: Beginners opt for sub-ohm devices with low-nicotine e-liquids and are surprised that their cravings remain. Conversely, frequent users sometimes vape with excessively high nicotine levels in MTL pods and find every puff feels like a scratch in the throat.

How can I increase my throat hit?

Increase the nicotine strength, choose a liquid with a higher PG content (e.g. 50/50) or switch to a tighter MTL draw. Fresh coils and clean flavours such as tobacco or menthol also noticeably enhance the sensation.

Why does my throat suddenly feel scratchy when vaping?

A sudden scratchy sensation usually indicates a burnt coil, too little e-liquid in the tank, or a wattage setting that is too high. Check the wattage setting, e-liquid level and age of the atomiser head, and reduce the power gradually.

Is a strong throat hit harmful?

A distinct throat hit is normal and not harmful in itself. However, a persistent harsh scratchy sensation may indicate too much nicotine or an intolerance to PG – in which case it’s worth switching to nicotine salt or a VG-heavy e-liquid.

Is there a throat hit even without nicotine?

Yes, but much weaker. The PG in the e-liquid already creates a slight sensation. Anyone who wants to vape nicotine-free but still seeks a noticeable hit should opt for 50/50 bases with strong flavours.

Throat hit is not a random occurrence, but the result of nicotine, base ratio, power and draw technique. If you want to fine-tune your throat hit, it’s best to start with the e-liquid: nicotine strength and the PG/VG mix determine the majority of the sensation. In our range of nicotine shots and matching e-liquids, you’ll find the full spectrum from a smooth sub-ohm draw to a powerful MTL hit – take your time to compare which combination suits your vaping style. Products containing nicotine are for adults aged 18 and over only.
