Top cap: Structure and replacement of the vaporiser top cap
Top cap guide for e-cigarettes: Structure, materials and replacement explained clearly. Tips on drip tips, seals and airflow for your vaporiser tank.
The top cap is the upper part of your atomiser and serves more purposes than meets the eye. It seals the tank, holds the drip tip in place and, in many models, helps control the airflow. If you want to refill, clean or repair a tank, you can’t do without the atomiser cap. In this guide, you’ll learn how a top cap is constructed, how to spot differences in quality and what to look out for when buying a replacement top cap.
A top cap is the upper part of a vaporiser, i.e. the screw-on or snap-on cap above the tank. It sits between the glass tank and the drip tip and seals the system at the top. In most sub-ohm and MTL (mouth-to-lung) tanks, the top cap also serves as the filling mechanism: either it can be unscrewed, or it features a sliding or tilting closure beneath which the e-liquid opening is located.
The top cap should be distinguished from the drip tip, the actual mouthpiece, and from the chimney, the internal air tube. Technically, the top cap of a vaporiser is usually made of stainless steel or an anodised aluminium alloy, sealed by one or two silicone O-rings. Additionally, many top caps feature an airflow ring or a top airflow slot, which regulates the air supply from above and prevents leakage through the airflow ring at the bottom.
The drip tip cap performs three key functions: sealing, filling and directing airflow. When screwed or slid open, it exposes the filling slot, allowing you to pour 2 to 8 ml of e-liquid directly into the tank without having to completely dismantle the device.
Top-fill systems
Modern tanks almost exclusively use top-fill. The top cap is unscrewed (quarter-turn) or slid to the side. Advantage: clean, quick refilling without e-liquid on the mod.
Top airflow
In top-airflow tanks, the air vents are located directly in the cap. This prevents leaking, as no liquid reaches the airflow channels. This design is particularly useful for nicotine salt e-liquids with low viscosity.
Drip tip mount
Most top caps use the 510 or 810 standard. This allows you to swap the drip tip individually without having to change the cap itself.
A suitable atomiser cap determines tightness, handling and flavour. If you’re looking for a replacement top cap, you should check the following points:
- Exact model compatibility: Top caps are manufacturer-specific. A Caliburn top cap will not fit a Nautilus, even if they look similar. Make a note of the manufacturer’s name and exact model designation, including the version (e.g. ‘V2’ or ‘Mini’).
- Condition of the O-rings: Two to three silicone sealing rings ensure a tight seal. If they are brittle, swollen or torn, the tank will leak. Many replacement part sets include suitable O-rings.
- Material and finish: Stainless steel (SS304/SS316) is durable and liquid-resistant. With aluminium caps, check for a clean anodised finish to ensure the coating does not flake off.
- Drip tip standard: Before buying, check whether the cap has a 510 or 810 connection so that your existing mouthpieces will still fit.
- Threads: Over-tightened threads can strip quickly. Tighten the top cap only hand-tight and clean the threads regularly to remove any e-liquid residue.
A common mistake: coils are changed with too much force, causing the seal in the cap to tear. Work carefully and let the tank vent before opening by briefly pulling on the drip tip.
Why is my tank leaking from the top cap?
In most cases, this is caused by a swollen or missing O-ring. Also check that the cap is screwed on properly and that the fill port is completely closed. With thin nicotine salt liquids, even a small leak is often enough to cause visible leakage.
Can I replace a top cap with a universal one?
No. The atomiser cap is designed to match the thread diameter, chimney length and seal of the specific tank. Always order a replacement top cap that is exactly suited to your model – if in doubt, check with the retailer, specifying the version.
How do I clean the top cap properly?
Unscrew it completely, remove the O-rings and rinse all parts with warm water. Dry them thoroughly before reassembling. Once per e-liquid change is usually sufficient.
Are 510 and 810 drip tips interchangeable?
No, the diameters are different. Some top caps include an adapter so that both standards can be used. Check the drip tip cap carefully before purchasing.
The top cap may seem unremarkable, but it is crucial for the seal, filling and flavour of your setup. If you vape regularly, you should keep an eye on the cap and its seals and replace them as needed when worn.
