Top Fill: Filling the vaporiser from above made easy
Top fill explained: How to fill your vaporiser from the top quickly, cleanly and without leakage. Including buying tips, care and comparison with bottom-fill tanks.
Top fill refers to filling a vape device from the top – without having to unscrew the tank or dismantle the base. For many vapers, this is now the standard solution because it saves time, reduces spills and is much more practical when you’re on the go. Nevertheless, there are differences between the systems: screw cap, bayonet lock or click-top – each has its pros and cons. In this guide, you’ll learn how top fill works technically, what to look out for when buying a top fill tank and how to avoid typical beginner’s mistakes when refilling.
Top Fill is a filling system where the vapouriser’s filling port is located at the top of the tank. You simply open the top cap (cap, drip tip assembly or sliding mechanism) and pour your e-liquid directly into the tank. The base, comprising the coil, airflow ring and 510 thread, remains firmly attached to the e-cigarette.
The Top Fill system should be distinguished from the classic Bottom Fill: with older or purist atomisers, you have to detach the tank from the mod, turn it upside down and unscrew the base to fill it with e-liquid. This increases the risk of spilling residue from the airflow or damaging the coil.
Technically, top fill is now fitted to almost all modern sub-ohm tanks, MTL vapes and pod mod tanks. Typical designs are:
- Screw cap: The top cap is turned once or twice and removed.
- Quarter-turn / bayonet: A quarter-turn is sufficient to open.
- Slide-to-fill / click-top: A slider or spring mechanism releases the opening.
The principle is simple: hold the atomiser upright, open the top cap and insert the tip of the bottle into the filling port. The e-liquid flows down the inside of the glass, whilst the air escapes upwards through the same slot. That’s why most top-fill tanks have an off-centre or slit-like opening – rather than a central hole above the chimney, through which you would otherwise just be pumping air into the tank.
Typical use cases
Easy refilling is particularly invaluable when you’re short on time or don’t have a clean surface: on the go, in the car (when parked!), whilst travelling or between meetings. It also saves you the hassle of unscrewing and cleaning the base every time you switch flavours, for instance when trying out several 10ml e-liquids.
Combination with coil replacement
Handy: Many modern top-fill tanks also allow coil changes from the top. You unscrew the top cap, pull out the chimney tube and have direct access to the atomiser head without having to drain any e-liquid.
Not every top-fill system is equally well designed. These points determine its suitability for everyday use:
- Opening mechanism: Screw caps are leak-proof but slower. Slide and click systems are lightning-fast but can open unintentionally in your pocket during everyday use. Check whether a child-proof lock (press-and-turn) is fitted.
- Size of the filling opening: Wide slots accommodate even thick 70/30 VG liquids and short-fill bottles with a larger tip diameter. Narrow openings only work with unicorn bottles or precision tips.
- Tank capacity: 2 ml is standard in the EU/CH for TPD-compliant devices, 4–8 ml for large sub-ohm tanks. Greater capacity means less refilling, but also more e-liquid that can leak in the event of damage.
- Seals (O-rings): High-quality silicone seals last longer and are e-liquid-resistant. Cheaper models become brittle after a few months – look out for replacement seal sets.
- Visibility of the fill level: A clear viewing window or translucent glass prevents overfilling. Too much e-liquid displaces the air and leads to gurgling or leaking.
A common mistake: refilling too quickly right to the brim. Always leave about 2–3 mm of airspace under the top cap to prevent pressure building up in the tank.
Is top-fill really more leak-proof than bottom-fill?
Yes, provided the build quality is the same. As the airflow channels are located at the bottom and are not opened during refilling, the atomiser remains free of e-liquid residue in the airways. The key factors are intact O-rings and a correctly sealed top cap.
Can I fill any type of e-liquid from the top?
Yes – 10ml bottles, short fills and nicotine shots all work. For very thick 80/20 or 90/10 VG e-liquids, a unicorn bottle with a thin tip helps to allow air to escape from the tank.
How often should I change the top cap seal?
With daily use, every three to six months, or as soon as the tank starts making gurgling noises or e-liquid leaks out. Spare O-rings are included with almost every atomiser.
Can a top-fill tank leak on a plane?
Pressure differences can force e-liquid through the coil wick. Empty two-thirds of the tank before the flight and carry the e-cigarette upright in your hand luggage – this applies to all filling systems.
Top fill makes refilling quicker, cleaner and more convenient. Key factors are a well-designed opening mechanism, sturdy seals and a sufficiently large filling opening for your e-liquid format. If you’re switching from bottom fill, you’ll notice the difference after just a few refills. In our selection of vaporisers, you’ll find top-fill tanks for MTL and DL vapers – combined with the right coils and your favourite e-liquid, nothing stands in the way of a relaxing vape.
