Tube Mod - tube-shaped battery carrier for e-cigarettes
Guide: Function, design and safety of tubular battery carriers. What you should look out for when buying - including tips for beginners and professionals.
A tube mod is a cylindrical battery mod that has become a classic among e-cigarettes thanks to its slim, cigar-like design. Anyone looking to buy a tube mod is faced with a choice between mechanical variants, regulated models and various battery sizes. This guide explains how a tube battery mod is constructed, the differences between mechanical tube mods and electronically regulated versions, and what you should look out for when buying. This will help you make an informed decision and avoid typical beginner’s mistakes.
A tube mod is a cylindrical battery mod that houses one or two replaceable 18650, 20700 or 21700 batteries. The name is derived from the English word ‘tube’ and describes its characteristic shape: usually 22 to 25 millimetres in diameter on the outside, so that standard atomisers fit flush onto the 510 connection.
Unlike box mods, the tubular battery mod does not have a separate battery compartment – the battery sits directly inside the tube. There are two main types:
- Mechanical Tube: no electronics, no circuit board. The current flows directly from the battery to the coil. Suitable only for experienced users with knowledge of Ohm’s law and battery safety.
- Controlled tube mod: with a chip, display (or LED indicator) and safety circuits to protect against short circuits, overheating and deep discharge.
This clearly distinguishes the tube mod from pod systems, which operate with a permanently installed battery and lower power output.
Operation is deliberately kept simple. A fire button on the side or at the bottom activates the current flow to the atomiser. With regulated models, you set wattage or temperature values, usually between 10 and 80 watts. A mechanical tube mod, on the other hand, always delivers the full battery voltage – typically 3.7 to 4.2 volts – to the coil.
Typical uses
- Direct-to-lung (DL) vaping with sub-ohm atomisers (resistance below 1 ohm)
- Rebuildables (RDA/RTA) for self-wound coils
- On the go, as the slim design fits easily into a trouser pocket
Battery variants compared
An 18650 battery delivers approx. 2500–3500 mAh capacity, a 21700 up to 5000 mAh. For longer usage time without charging, 21700 tubes are the better choice; 18650 models, however, remain lighter and more compact.
There’s a wide selection – these points will help you decide:
- Regulated or mechanical? Beginners should opt exclusively for regulated tubes with a protection circuit. A mechanical tube requires experience with battery safety.
- Battery format: 18650 is universal and affordable, whilst 21700 offers longer runtime. Check whether you need to buy the battery separately (usually yes).
- Material and finish: Stainless steel or aluminium with cleanly machined threads ensure reliable contact and a long service life.
- 510 connection: a spring-loaded pin compensates for different atomiser depths and prevents short circuits.
- Charging option: some tube mods charge via USB-C directly in the device, whilst others require you to insert the battery into an external charger. External charging is considered safer.
- Safety features: Overcurrent protection, reverse polarity protection and vent holes are essential in a tube mod.
A common mistake: using cheap, unbranded batteries. Stick exclusively to cells from reputable manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, Molicel or LG, whose discharge current (at least 20–30 A continuous) suits your setup.
Is a mechanical tube mod suitable for beginners?
No. Without protective electronics, any faults in the build will directly affect the battery. A short circuit can lead to gas build-up or, in the worst case, a fire. Start with a regulated tube mod and gain some experience first.
How long does a tube mod battery last?
With average use at 40–60 watts, an 18650 battery lasts around 4–8 hours, a 21700 battery correspondingly longer. With proper care, the cells themselves last for 300–500 full charge cycles before the capacity noticeably decreases.
Which atomisers fit on a tube mod?
Any atomiser with a 510 thread. Make sure the atomiser’s diameter isn’t larger than that of the tube – otherwise you’ll end up with an unsightly overhang. Most tubes are designed for 24–25 mm.
Can I buy a Tube mod freely in Switzerland?
Yes, e-cigarettes, including Tube mods, are freely available to adults aged 18 and over. They are shipped from Switzerland; there are no special regulations for mechanical Tube mods, but they do require appropriate specialist knowledge.
A tube mod combines a classic look with solid vapour production and, thanks to its simple operation, remains a popular alternative to box mods. It is important to make an informed choice between regulated and mechanical versions, as well as high-quality batteries. In our selection of battery mods, you will find suitable models for various levels of experience – it is also worth taking a look at coils and chargers to safely complete your setup.
