Watt setting on the e-cigarette: choose the right power
Choose the right wattage setting for your e-cigarette: Find the optimum wattage for your coil, vape safely and get the most out of your flavour.
The right wattage setting determines whether your e-cigarette vapes cleanly, delivers the right flavour and ensures the coil lasts a long time. If you set the power too low, the vapour will be thin and the flavour flat. Too much wattage burns the cotton, produces a harsh ‘dry hit’ and noticeably shortens the lifespan of your atomiser heads. In this guide, you’ll learn what wattage means in the context of vaping, how coil resistance and power are related, and how to find your optimal wattage step by step – whether you’re using a pod system, an MTL atomiser or a sub-ohm setup.
Watts (W) is the electrical power that your mod delivers to the coil. Technically, it is the product of voltage and current: the chip in the device regulates both values so that the heating wire receives exactly the wattage you have selected. The higher the e-cigarette’s power, the faster and hotter the coil becomes, and the more e-liquid is vaporised per puff.
The wattage setting therefore directly determines the vapour volume, the temperature and the intensity of the flavour. The interaction with the coil resistance in ohms (Ω) is always crucial: A 1.2-ohm coil requires significantly fewer watts than a 0.2-ohm mesh coil. That’s why the question ‘how many watts should I vape at’ can never be answered in general terms – it depends on your setup. Modern devices usually show the recommended power on the display or directly on the coil.
Every atomiser head has a recommended wattage range printed on the coil itself (e.g. “0.6Ω – 15–25 W”). This range is your starting point. Always start at the lower end and work your way up in 1-watt increments.
MTL (mouth-to-lung, tight draw)
Typical coils: 0.8 to 1.6 Ω. Recommended wattage setting: 10 to 18 W. Ideal for nicotine salt e-liquids and a classic cigarette feel.
DL (Direct-Lung, direct lung draw)
Typical coils: 0.2 to 0.6 Ω. Suitable power: 25 to 60 W. Here, vapour volume and flavour intensity are key; the e-liquids are usually 70/30 VG/PG.
Pod systems
Many pods regulate the power automatically. If you can adjust it manually, you’ll usually stay between 10 and 20 W.
As a rule of thumb: the higher the VG content in the e-liquid, the more watts your setup can handle. E-liquids with a high PG content are more sensitive to overheating.
To find your optimal wattage, it’s worth taking a systematic approach. Bear the following points in mind:
- Read the coil specifications first: The printed wattage range is not a guideline, but the safety limit. Do not exceed it continuously.
- Start from the bottom: Begin 2–3 watts below the average, take a puff, and increase gradually. This way, you can taste when the flavour ‘comes through’.
- Listen to the taste: If the e-liquid tastes flat or sweet and burnt, you have exceeded the threshold. Reduce the wattage by 2–3 watts immediately.
- Consider the e-liquid composition: Sweet, dark flavours (tobacco, dessert) caramelise more quickly and prefer lower wattage. Fruit and menthol e-liquids can handle higher power.
- Adjust the airflow: Higher wattages require more airflow, otherwise the vapour will become too hot. Open the airflow dial as you increase the power.
- Keep an eye on the battery: High wattages drain the battery quickly. For sub-ohm setups from 60 W upwards, a dual-battery device is recommended.
If you’re adjusting the wattage on your vape for the first time, make a note of the settings where the e-liquid tastes best. That way, you’ll have a starting point for every new flavour.
What happens if I set the wattage too high?
The cotton in the coil burns, resulting in a harsh, bitter dry hit. The atomiser head is usually unusable afterwards. Additionally, the high temperature puts a strain on the battery and can break down e-liquid flavours.
What wattage is best for beginners?
Beginners will find the most comfortable experience with an MTL pod set to 10–15 W. This setup is forgiving of mistakes, uses little e-liquid and delivers a cigarette-like draw – ideal for getting started.
Do I need to reset the wattage every time I fit a new coil?
Yes. Even coils of the same design can vary slightly in resistance. After inserting and soaking the coil, start 2–3 watts below your usual setting and work your way back up.
Why does my e-liquid suddenly taste different at the same wattage?
Usually, the coil is at the end of its life, or the e-liquid has become too hot at high power. Also check the fill level – an almost empty tank produces dry hits more quickly at the same wattage setting.
Finding the right wattage setting isn’t a maths puzzle, but a combination of coil specifications, e-liquid and personal vaping preference. If you start low and stick to the recommended range, you’ll get more flavour, cleaner vapour and longer coil life. In our range of e-cigarettes, you’ll find devices for every performance level – from sleek pods to dual-battery mods. You can then take your time to match the right coils and e-liquids to your setup.
