Squonk Mod - The bottom feeder battery carrier explained
Squonk Mod guide: Functionality, advantages and selection of the bottom feeder battery carrier. Incl. tips on liquid bottles, care and squonking in Switzerland.
A squonk mod is a battery mod with a built-in e-liquid bottle that pushes the e-liquid directly into the atomiser from below – a system designed for fans of rebuildable atomisers. Instead of re-wetting the cotton every few puffs, you simply squeeze the silicone bottle to supply your RDA with fresh e-liquid. This saves time, reduces mess and delivers consistent flavour. In this guide, you’ll learn how a squonker box is technically constructed, what the system is suitable for and what you should look out for when buying one.
A squonk mod – also known as a squonker box or squonk battery mod – is a bottom feeder. This means that the e-liquid is pumped from below through the 510 connection directly into the atomiser’s chamber. This is made possible by a soft silicone bottle (usually 6–10 ml) inside the casing and a special squonk pin in the atomiser, which opens a liquid channel.
The Squonker should be distinguished from classic mods for tank systems: whilst you regularly fill the tank with e-liquid in those, the e-liquid in a bottom feeder remains in the bottle inside the mod. The atomiser head (usually an RDA or RDTA with a squonk pin) contains only as much e-liquid as the cotton can absorb. Squonk mods are available as mechanical versions, as regulated single-battery devices, or as dual-battery boxes with a chipset, display and variable wattage.
You attach a squonk-compatible RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer) to the mod. Its 510 pin is hollow and channels e-liquid into the chamber as soon as you squeeze the bottle inside the housing. A light squonk per vaping session is enough to keep the cotton fresh.
Typical use cases
- Intense flavour: Fresh e-liquid on the cotton delivers cleaner flavours than a stagnant tank.
- On the go without a drip bottle: You don’t need to pack a separate e-liquid bottle – everything is in the mod.
- Build-your-own coil setups: Those who build their own coils and frequently change flavours benefit from the quick replacement of the squonk bottle.
What squonking does not replace
A squonk mod is not a beginner’s system. You need basic knowledge of coil building, handling batteries (18650 or 21700) and reading resistance values. If you’re looking for a simple setup, you’re usually better off with a pod system or a classic sub-ohm tank.
A squonk mod is a precision device – these points determine comfort and safety:
- Bottle material and size: Silicone is soft and flexible, whilst PET is more robust but harder. Capacities of between 6 and 10 ml are standard. Ensure the material is food-safe and e-liquid-resistant.
- Battery configuration: Single 18650 mods are compact and sufficient for 40–60 watts. Dual-battery squonkers deliver up to 200 watts and longer runtime, but are larger and heavier.
- Regulated or mechanical: Regulated mods with a chipset offer short-circuit, overheating and deep-discharge protection. Mechanical squonkers are professional tools and require a sound understanding of Ohm’s law.
- Squonk pin compatible: Not every RDA is squonk-compatible. Check whether the atomiser has a bottom-feed pin or is supplied as a kit with a squonk pin.
- Ergonomics: The squonk opening should be easily accessible with your thumb or index finger. Test the pressure points in your hand before making a decision.
Common mistakes: squonking too hard (e-liquid runs into the drip tip), not pressing often enough (dry cotton, burnt taste) or using the wrong pin in the atomiser (no e-liquid flow). One or two short presses before each puff are usually sufficient.
Is squonking suitable for beginners?
Generally speaking, no. Squonk mods require you to wrap coils yourself, measure resistances and handle batteries safely. Beginners are better off starting with a pod system or a sub-ohm tank.
Which e-liquid is suitable for a squonker box?
E-liquids with a higher VG content (70/30 or 80/20) are recommended, as they are well suited to sub-ohm coils. Very thick e-liquids can make the bottle difficult to squeeze – test this with small amounts.
How do I maintain a squonk mod?
Clean the squonk pin regularly with a cotton bud, check the bottle for cracks and replace it if it becomes discoloured or brittle. Keep the battery contacts clean and never use damaged batteries.
Where can I get squonking accessories in Switzerland?
You can find replacement bottles, squonk pins and compatible RDAs in specialist shops in Switzerland. Ensure compatibility with your specific mod model, as bottle shapes are manufacturer-specific.
A squonk mod is the link between classic dripping and practical everyday vaping: you retain the intense flavour of an RDA without having to constantly drip. The key elements are a suitable bottle, a safe battery mod and a squonk-compatible atomiser. In our selection of battery mods, you’ll find regulated and mechanical models – take your time to compare the specs before deciding on your next squonk setup. This product is intended exclusively for adults aged 18 and over.
